Navigating Dietary Restrictions: FoodFriend’s Story

The start of it all

The story of how FoodFriend came to be is something deeply personal to me. My own struggle with navigating dietary restrictions after 20 years of living life without them felt like I was facing an uphill, never-ending battle. Reading every label, asking numerous questions, and yet I still never felt like I could make a confident decision around food.navigating dietary restrictions

As I met more people with allergies, sensitivities, or even just autoimmune issues, I began to notice a common theme: confusion and frustration. We all wanted a simple answer to a never-ending question: “Can I eat this?” Because of that, the idea for FoodFriend started to take shape.

Certainly, I wanted to be part of the solution in finding ways to make eating less overwhelming and to create a platform that helps people feel seen.

Listening to real people with real stories

Once I had this idea, I reached out to numerous people who deal with sensitivities like mine on a daily basis, medical professionals who help those with sensitivities, and people who own business that cater to those with sensitivities or allergies.  Their insights have guided almost every decision I have made with FoodFriend. I have asked numerous questions, held many informed conversations, and invited them to openly share their stories.

However, one conversation in particular stood out to me. I talked with someone who not only experiences these daily challenges but also helps coach others through them.  One of the most important things she told me is that when she started on her journey, ” I just wanted someone to help advise me and tell me yes or no.”

Most importantly, her comment captured exactly what others feel. They don’t want confusing or complicated; they simply want an answer to a question that is much harder than it should be.

All of these conversations proved that FoodFriend wasn’t just my idea, but one that can help others.

A challenge to overcome

Early on, the main idea was to focus on incorporating a large amount of data into the app. However, learning how much goes into incorporating data into apps, I realized that starting out, it isn’t fully feasible for a start-up.

To shift to a more feasible system, I will be combining the use of

  • Personalized profiles
  • AI ingredient scanning
  • Community input
  • Existing product rating

This pivot makes the app more scalable and creates a path to strengthen the heart of the venture.

The values and vision

The core values that guide FoodFriend are

  • Accessibility
  • Transparency
  • Community
  • Empathy

Above all, I hope that FoodFriend is more than just an app. I want it to provide a community for those who navigate dietary challenges. Learning from others, growing together, reducing confusion, and providing clear support.

Heading into the future

So, the focus for the coming months is to build out the app in preparation for an early access launch. This includes the full build-out of the app, all of its features, and updating where necessary. Once the app is built, the plan is to release an early access code where friends, family, people from wellness communities, and those who are navigating dietary restrictions. These individuals can use the app and provide feedback. After the first version has been used for 1-2 months, FoodFriend will then be updated accordingly for a beta launch.
